DESCRIPTION: APW - Waltham, Wm Ellery with case inscription for Civil War participant, Model 1857, 11J, 18S, coin silver original HC with eagle hallmark and "inchworm" style Am Watch Co marking, nickel cuvette engraved "Joseph M. Reed, 11th Mass. Battery," white enamel dial, KWKS, gilt mvt, s#64276. This movement is from a production run listed in Waltham factory records as having been made in June of 1863. Joseph M. Reed was born February 27th, 1845, enlisted in the Civil War on December 2nd, 1863, was mustered into the 11th Massachusetts Battery on January 2nd, 1864, was mustered out of the 11th Massachusetts Battery on June 16th, 1865, and following the war gained prominence as a businessman and member of town government of Rockport, Massachusetts until his passing in 1927. In our photos with this lot we have included an image of Joseph M. Reed's pension card as well as images of "The Boston Globe" articles from 1920 and 1922 which note Joseph M. Reed's service with the 11th Massachusetts, his second marriage at 74 years of age, and his attendance at the 58th reunion of the 11th Light Battery. From the estate of Daniel L. Haff.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, fine cosmetic mvt condition overall, dulled and yellowed plate tone; excellent dial with small edge flake at 5:30, few minuscule edge nicks under bezel elsewhere; excellent hands, minute and seconds-hand with some finish loss and bits of oxide; case shows light wear, mild ding at upper left shoulder of front, slight ripple to reflection of front shield caused by mild protruding ding at center, shallow crease type dent located vertically near mid-point of rear, shallow mild dent to lower right shoulder of rear, engine turning lost at shoulders, intact with moderate reduction elsewhere; bow pivoting freely through a very small central range of motion before becoming tight, push shows medium to ample wear; good glass crystal.
